Okay, I’ve been in a rut lately. An uninspired, blah kind of funky thing. You know, you’ve been there. So I’ve decided that today, Wednesday, “hump day,” as it’s commonly and fondly known as, is the day, I’m climbing out.
Humps are good because you know once you get OVER them, life gets better, brighter.
What helps us get out of a funk and over the hump? Sunny blue skies? Nope, that’s been around here for the last few days and it’s not working for me. Good food? Check, Hubby made ribs last night and it didn’t work, I had two and was like, eh.
Watching America’s Got Talent? Did last night and good gawd, no. I mean, I appreciate the talent, but I found myself reading a good suspense novel more than watching television. More often lately, television sucks the life out of me.
Taking a walk with the pups. Helped some. Went to the gym on Monday sloughed my way through a workout. Lifted heavy things and put them down. Helped somewhat. Someday, people are going to laugh that we actually paid money to do this — wait and see. Went for a bike ride yesterday, helped a little.
Worked on a disturbing short story I’m writing which actually helped because I was happy with it. But today, I’ve over it and I’m going to do this:
- Take a walk with the pups, it’s gorgeous here. Low 80s and no humidity.
- Go to the gym. Hate doing this lately but I feel better if I do because I’d like to lose seven pounds (that sounds better than ten and seriously does a woman EVER not want to lose a few pounds??? If I could go back and talk to myself twenty years ago, I would say: You’re not fat, you’re beautiful and stop looking at those airbrushed pictures of other women!!!) But I can’t go back so I’m going to start THAT today too.
- Write more on my short story.
I’m in a slow, standstill period as far as work goes and I know that sooner or later something will come and I’ve got this time to do what I need to do. But what lifts me out more than anything is music. Silly, fun music. Not rock, not country, jazz, hip hop, head-banging, screaming angst-filled music, but silly.
If you download tunes from iTunes, you know that once you do unless you manually remove the songs, every song you download zips onto your iPod when you plug it in to your computer.
Sometimes I get songs for myself and other times for posts. I was in the dreaded gym last week and one of those songs came on. It was from this post. (If you want to click on the link, go ahead, it will come up in another window and you can press the play button and listen while you read the rest of my nonsense here, but try not to get distracted by the sparkly butterflies).
Anyway, it came on while I was doing those stupid lat pulldowns on the stupid lat pulldown machine and I actually smiled, even laughed a little and I really wanted to skip around like a ballerina, but I didn’t think it was the time or place.
Are you listening to that other song now and smiling? Maybe dancing a bit like this:
I hope so.
I found another song and I recommend before you listen to wear something like this:
If you’re gonna go, go big.
I had to settle for this (it’s a floppy beach hat with a peace scarf and fruit on it):
Happy Hump Day everyone and thanks for reading to the end of this drivel.
Now press play and get over the hump.
Carmen Miranda singing Mama Yo Quiero!! That’s old school. I’m pretty sure this song was on an episode of I Love Lucy, with Lucy lip syncing to it.
I think everyone has a case of the Blahs, Brigitte. But you know it’s bad when you just go “Eh” with ribs. That’s not a good sign.
Maybe you should make some more hats. I like your first one. You might need some really hardcore glue to keep the fruit on, but whatev.
It is old-school and I LOVE that episode of I Love Lucy singing it….that’s where I got the idea for all this nonsense. :). Don’t know why I thought of it. And yeah, on the hat, the trusty glue-gun’s not going to cut it. Plus it’s really heavy.
I remember that last song from an episode of Tom and Jerry! 🙂 It is definitely making me smile.
Good! Smiles are good. 😀
Music works for just about anything. And remember, if there wasn’t any humps, the good times wouldn’t feel quite so good. 🙂
You are correct on that one, Carrie. 😀
This is one of those times when I just want to reach through my computer screen and hug you!!!!
I loved this post.
I loved the illustration of you getting over the hump.
Awesome post, for real my friend.
Weebles is wise. We’ve all been there.
It sucks, but it shall pass…..this much I know.
I am smiling…and feeling pretty.
By giving so many smiles,
the universe HAS to give some back to you today.
And I know it will.
Lis, you’re a sweetie — thank you. Glad you enjoyed the post — that was the intention to bring maybe a laugh or two. It’s all better now and I’m very glad you are smiling and feeling pretty. And you’re right, it’s already given back. Thank you. xxoo
Everybody’s feeling it Brig, it’s the Blog Days of Summer. I’m gonna go write some drivel of my own. At least you have music in your posts that gets my toe tapping while sitting at my stupid desk.
Yeah, I know. I love that “Blog Days of Summer.” You are the queen of wit. A Queen Wit. A Wit Queen — which is better? Whatever is the best one for you, it what you are. I just need to kick my inner child’s big a*s and all will be well. :).
You’re so nice! I think of you often as I’m trying to plot my escape from the office into freelancerdom. I gotta get on that. I have till January, at least in my head I do.
Yup, that’s exactly what I looked like dancing to “I Feel Pretty”, especially since I’m in the middle of a sewing project for my daughter and I’ve got bits of fabric everywhere! And Carmen Miranda…what fun! It’s not easy to shift from “doing” to “being.” You’re making a great start! Okay, back to the sweat shop, I mean sewing project! xoxoM
I bet you did except you have your hula skirt on, don’t you Margarita? One thing, though despite all the funky blah going on there seems to be some funny as well, as evident by your witty reply. And Banter. Shucks, look at that, I worked banter into my reply. xxoo. 🙂
Things are looking up already! 🙂 No, hula skirt would have taken me to a whole other dancing place! It’s good to mix it up! xoxoM
L O V E this. Do you remember the I Love Lucy episode where she lip-sinked this and the record skipped? I sometimes put on a cd I purchased on a trip to Mexico and jump around doing some ridiculous combination of the macarena and the hustle. That can be a secret, right? Fun post lady. Happy Hump Day!
YES! I love that episode. Lucy and Ethel — so many sitcoms have been modeled after this format. One of my faves was Will and Grace. I love to listen to Edith Pilaf when I’m feeling all French and deep too. Ummm, think I’ll have to post one about that… Glad you enjoyed, you funny lady, you. Happy Hump Day to you.
I think summertime blues and ennui are everywhere—you are not alone, if that helps! But you’ve taken them and made a great summertime blog post. Ribs sound more comforting than the pasta and spinach I’m making for dinner tonight. 🙂
I think you’re right, JM and I love the word ennui. :). Thank you though, I’m so glad you enjoyed the post and identified with it. We do have some leftovers…..
struggling to the top myself 🙂
I can feel your struggling to the top of the hump vibe from here. :D. Thanks, J.
you are welcome … lets push and pull together
That lovely tune certainly put a spring in my step.
I sometimes experience something very similar to your blahs. Through a long process (with which I won’t bore you) I’ve been able to identify many of the things which trigger this response. Often, once I’ve identified the trigger, the solution suggests itself.
Most often, when this happens to me, it’s the result of a lack of stimulation, and probably indicates that I’m not challenging myself, and am coasting. My life has become routine.
Over the past several years I’ve gotten a lot better at preventing this, and in overcoming it on those occasions when it does happen. For me, these times are awful. Not in that they’re painful; they’re not. But during these times I find that my brain is dulled, and won’t serve me the way I need it to. So in this way I guess I’m like that girl from one of the Wizard of Oz books who slid down a rainbow and froze, and now must remain in constant motion or she’ll freeze forever.
I also think that exercise will help banish the blahs. Physical activity has a very positive effect on mood.
Smak, really are you Anthony Robbins? Is Smak your moniker?? You seem to have such sage advice/wisdom plus a great radio voice and a whole lotta funny. Got some physical exercise and it did indeed help. Thank you friend. :).
You’re very kind. And sadly (as I discuss in more detail in my reply to your comment on my blog), although we’ve briefly occupied the same general space and both have banana hands, we’re not the same fellow.
Okey dokey, then. No worries, just a joke, dude. My bad. 😀
I didn’t take any offense! I hope there wasn’t anything in my response that gave that impression.
I need a humpday hat. Do you suppose you can balance a box of wine on one?
I think it’s absolutely necessary that one balances a box of wine on their humpday hat. 🙂
Just so you know, you inspire me. A high five from Victoria, BC to get you on your way!
Thanks, Sally. You do the same for me and thank you, lady. And I’ll take it and right back at you, friend. :).
High fivers all around lady… you never write drivel. I love the hump day picture!
Thanks, Audra. :).
When I need to get over humpday at work, I listen to this song and think of my dog’s silly dopey furry face.
Drew, thank you…I do the same, I have two dogs with their silly dopey furry faces. Thank you. 🙂
I kept denying that the Summer Blogging Hump has hit me because I figured if I’m not in school anymore and working full time, I don’t have a summer anymore! But a post and a half later and I’ve conceded defeat…..
The fruit hat is fantastic btw. And so is the dancing woman silhouette. Gee, I feel better already. 🙂
Hi Lillian, I think it’s hit everyone. Thanks — glad you like the hat and that you feel better!! :).
Hump Day was a little rough for me, but I SURVIVED:)
Yay! Glad you did, Craves. :).
🙂 its always nice to come back on and read your blog. Always makes me feel so inspired. I love your cute little pictures too! I will keep your advice in mind when I hit my next hump!
Monie, what a nice thing to say — I’m so glad. You look like you’ve changed your blog a bit — LOVE IT. Love the balloons and the pics of the food look so yummy. What a wonderful adventure you must be having!!
I took a burlesque dancing class to deal with a blah hump day, it was great!
Oh, I like that idea!! That would definitely help one get over the hump!! Thanks, Natasia.
