I Hope You Dance — But Maybe Figuratively…

Hubby and I are going to a concert this weekend (more on this later) and I know they’ll be some dancing going on.  Now, I’m of the opinion that people probably shouldn’t do this (dance in public) after say, the age of 45.  Maybe women can get away with it a little longer, push that envelope a bit.

I’m too sexy for my hair and my spandex, but I can dance, oh yes, I can dance.

I’m all about having fun and letting go when the occasion calls for it.  I used to dance my a*s off at one point in my life.  I’d sling my hair around, twirl, cavort and I must say, I think I did a pretty good job of it.  In the days when my sis and I used to go “clubbing” I was much braver than she was.  We’re talking hands up in the air, pelvic grinding, lips pursed, head nodding, the whole bit.  Once I was out on the dance floor just gettin’ it and she walks over and says to me:

“Brigitte, you may want to tone it down a bit.  You look like a solid gold dancer.”  (They were hot in the 80s.)

H to the ells, yes I did, which of course, made me get even more jiggy with it.  But, I could pull it off then.  Alas, I think that public dancing thing is for the younger (teens, twenties, thirties).  Unless you’re at some reunion or wedding where everyone is dancing and you’re reliving those days.  It’s great!  Fun!  But, I wouldn’t want any cameras rolling because I certainly wouldn’t want that showing up on YouTube.  Maybe, I’ve become more reserved, more inhibited or maybe I’ve seen other people of a certain age dancing and I don’t know….

When hubby does his dance thing at home, it’s always the same.  Shoulders up, fists kind up near his waist and he pumps his upper body from side to side, his hips going the opposite way and his feet doing some strange little shuffle.  “You are soooo sexy,” I tell him.  Which makes him get into it even more.  (Honey, I know you read this from time to time and you can bust a move, oh yeah you can.)  In all his swarthy, clunky glory he’s no Fred Astaire, but he tries and laughs at himself.  Which makes me laugh and that’s the point of it, right?  To have fun.

Hubby and I at home, dancing.

Then we’ll both dance, but this is in the privacy of our home.  Or in our backyard with some tunes playing.  It’s fun to dance.  I do it often, alone.  In more public venues — I’ve passed that torch to the ones that can keep the fire burning longer than I can and hold it up much more adeptly.

Have you ever watched people dancing when you can’t hear the music?  It really looks kind of bizarre.  People flailing about, not knowing exactly where to look, doing one move for awhile before going into another, then going back into that original move.

Hey baby, forgive the overbite. Wanna dance?

Especially the hetero white male, you can tell he’s slightly uncomfortable but still trying to keep the cool factor going to impress the ladies.  Remember in the movie When Harry Met Sally and Billy Crystal was talking to Meg Ryan about the “whole life-of-a-single-guy” and he says that when a man and woman do the “safe lunch,” then the dinner, then go dancing and the guys’s doing “the white-man’s over-bite,” that’s what I’m referring to.

Women move more gracefully, I think.  It’s just my opinion.  Not being sexist here, guys, but seriously, for the most part, women are better dancers.  I’m talking just average people here — not Broadway dancers or trained peeps that do this for a living.

Anyway, I’m sure I’ll find myself swaying a bit and hubby will do his shoulder thing.  Who knows, we may go into some full break dancing or a few kick ball changes.  And oh yes, I will give faith a fighting chance, but when I have the choice to sit it out or dance, I’ll most likely be doing that in my backyard.

Press play below, you’ll be glad you did.

Have a great weekend and dance,

dance I say.

Hubby and I, once we’re warmed up. We must dance!

  1. I used to love to dance, then I married someone who did not – good thing he had other attributes.
I think I used to see you up on the dance floor – I was the one trying to be cool, then I would forget myself and have fun.

  3. I used to love to go to the club and dance. Now my dancing throws my kids into fits of laughter. Maybe I should be insulted but… well… I’m a realist. A 30 something mama with a big bum shaking it to “Bust a Move” is funny. 🙂 Thanks for the great post and the great song. Turns out I still know all the words! hahahaha!

    • You go Hippie Mama. I bet they’re laughing with you, not AT you. Shake what ya momma gave ya, I say and so glad you like the post. That song does make one wanna get up and dance. ;). Love your moniker, btw.

  4. Wow, I haven’t thought about the Solid Gold Dancers in ages. They had it goin’ on.

Mr. Weebles has moves similar to those of your hubby, Brigitte. It’s a very White Boy dance. Bless them, they really aren’t as good at moving as women are.

  5. I’ve often wondered what an alien would think if he saw a dance club scene but couldn’t hear the music, as you alluded to. I suspect he’d be tempted to leave planet earth alone and return home…

    • Yes, we are the beautiful people. The one of me with my leg in the air was snapped just last night before bed (hubby often dips me before retiring) and the other just this morning before he went to work. Something about feathers, silk and spandex just makes me want to get my freak on. ;).

    • Nah. I’m just funsing here. ;). I say dance, dance!! We’ll get there and I’ll get my groove on, don’t you worry. You absolutely have to upgrade to be able to put those little play buttons and mp3’s on your blog. There is no other way. Go to your Dashboard, then go to Store and purchase the upgrade. Then you can download music. If you do and you have probs, email me and I’ll walk you through. Umm, maybe I should post a blog about that….

      Thanks, Carr!!

  9. Oh dear Brigitte, Joe and I have just started dancing lessons and some of the people are much older than us! We were just starting to get the hang of the rumba and now I’ve discovered we’re too old!!!! Love the post. Have a great weekend. Dance your heart out. 🙂

    • See, here’s the thing. I say this but I MUST DANCE, so go on with your bad self. We went to a wedding several months ago and I had on some of those ceiling walker shoes (the kind with the thick thing at the foot and the heel was 3 or 4 inches) and ONLY 1 glass of wine. Hubby and I were dancing and I FELL, then bounced. He scooped me up and whispered in my ear: Just keep dancing, just keep dancing. Nobody noticed. Cha, right!

You’re a braver woman than I am. I have control issues and if we took dance lessons, I’d always have to lead. Rumba away, dear one!!!! :).

  10. I always enjoyed dancing, but I wouldn’t say I was very good at it! 🙂 And I, too, married a man who doesn’t dance. Ah well, there’s other ways to have fun, too. 😉

A niece’s wedding is coming up next May…. There are too many people with too many cameras these days, so I will be very cautious at that event!

  11. haha! I will NEVER stop dancing in private or public. I love it! It’s good exercise, it’s fun, It’s invigorating and if someone has a camera, so be it, put it on utube, I don’t care because I will never stop dancing. Did I mention I love it? 🙂

  12. No, no, no! You must dance in public! Never, never stop dancing in public! I remember a New Years party a few years ago where I saw a couple, in their eighties, out on the dance floor and having the time of their lives. I remember thinking, “Let that be me at eighty!” I say if you still love to dance in private, then you get to dance in public too. This is such a simple joy!

I may live in a small country town but you can’t take the city out of the girl. Thanks for the smile and the flashback.. to many drunken nights on the dance floor 🙂

  15. Great blog. No one will ever see me dance in public…no one will ever want to see me dance in public 🙂 I am good with dancing to the music of the electric slide. I do it at home when I want to havea good workout.

  16. Nooooo I think people should always dance no matter how old they are! The Golden girls were always dancing in public. When I’m a granny I want to be dancing on the table tops 😉

    Posted by natasiarose | July 1, 2012, 10:18 am
    • I’m quite a bit away from the Golden Girls, 🙂 but I think you are right and despite what I said, I danced in public anyway…just goes to show, never say never. Thank you, Natasia. 😀
